Welcome to American Dance

American Dance has been serving San Luis Obispo county for over 20 years. Just recently voted San Luis Obispo’s Best Dance Studio, we are proud to offer a wide variety of dance classes to all age groups and skill levels. Your first class with us is free - please come by and check us out!

We offer small class sizes and structured instruction. Our instructors work off a syllabus and all students get individual attention.

We operate with an emphasis on self-esteem and a family-friendly atmosphere, and stive to promote dance in our schools and community.

Dancer Spotlight: Sarah Chavez

Sarah Chavez, 20 years old, has been dancing at American Dance for the past sixteen years and has been an American Dancer for the past six years. Sarah was selected out of hundreds of dancers to be a part of Dance with the Force this summer.

She will be spending June, July and August taking unlimited classes at Edge Performing Art Center and will be in the 16th Annual Edge Show at the end of July.

Sarah plans on living in L.A. and wants to audition for the dance program at Edge to pursue her dance career.

Local Dancers - Awards

The American Dancers from American Dance of SLO, under the Direction of Leslie Baumberger, received word from (2) two separate Dance Conventions that they have earned National Awards for two of the company’s current dance pieces.

“Pop Muzik” choreographed by Suzy Miller was named Critics Choice National & Regional winner for New York City Dance Alliance.

“Fallen Angel” also choreographed by Ms. Miller was awarded the National All-Star Performers Award from LA Danceforce. “

It’s always an honor to be recognized by these national dance competitions” Ms. Baumberger stated, “Our local dancers work hard and are considered some of the best in the country and I am very proud of them”.

Auditions for this award winning company will be held August 10 at the American Dance of SLO Studio and is opened for all intermediate and advanced dancers ages 12-20yrs.

Studio Dance of the Year 2008

Malie Chang, Studio Dancer of the Year 2008 Malie Leinani Change of Lompoc, CA, has been selected to represent American Dance of SLO as Studio Dancer of the Year at the Tremaine Dance Convention and Competition in Las Vegas, July 2008.

Malie, an 18 year old graduating senior, has been an American Dancer for the past two years. Malie was selected for this honor because she has shown the most progress and potential in her dancing abilities. Malie was voted by her fellow American Dancers as the most dedicated dancer in the company.

Malie plans to move to Hollywood in late summer to continue her dance education at the Edge Performing Arts Center.

Her interests include jazz, modern, and ballet dance, voice, and acting; she hopes to become a professional dancer one day.

Her directory, Leslie Baumberger, says of Malie, “She has been a joy and pleasure to have in company. Her psoitive attitude and dedication to her art not only inspires me but all of her fellow dancers. We will miss her and wish her the best of luck in the future.”
